Angelica was a teen mother who needed work experience in order to enter the job market.
Angelica participated in the Summer Youth Employment program for two summers in a row. The first summer, she worked at a retail store in Long Beach. Following her graduation from high school, she again enrolled in the SYEP and was placed at Communities in Schools (CIS). At CIS, she performed clerical tasks, filed payroll documents and communicated with different businesses.
Outcomes & Benefits
Angelica gained work experience and really enjoyed working at CIS because they taught her a lot of things that will benefit her in the future. “If I didn’t understand something my managers would take the time out of their day and help me,” she said. Angelica learned about “so many things she wasn’t aware existed.” This valuable exposure to the business world has piqued her interest in accounting, a field she wants to pursue in future jobs.
