Andrea was in eleventh grade at Pioneer High School in Pico Rivera when she heard about the Summer Youth Program through SASSFA (Southeast Area Social Services Funding Authority). The same day, her mom also told her about the program. Andrea had never had a job and needed to get some work experience that would help her determine her path after high school.
SASSFA, as a WIA program provider for the County of Los Angeles, placed Andrea in a summer job experience at the Santa Fe Springs Fire Department. She was exposed to an office environment for the first time and learned new skills like answering phones in a professional manner, working on Excel spreadsheets and even riding in a real fire engine.
Outcomes & Benefits
Andrea now has a vision for her future: she plans to attend San Diego State University and major in Criminal Justice. When asked to elaborate, she said, “I want to be a cop on the street. I like to help people, to serve others. This would give me a chance not only to serve, but the opportunity to save others; it would be a daily challenge.”
