Meet Yvette

Story submitted by: Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board

Workforce Challenge

When Yvette became unemployed, she was very scared. Without a high school diploma or any formal training, she knew it would be difficult to find a new job. In fact, she didn't know where to even begin looking for employment.

Workforce Solution

At the Southeast Los Angeles County WIB (SELACO WIB), Yvette was assigned a case manager to offer guidance in finding employment. She participated in the STEPS workshop, which boosted her self esteem and helped her set goals for her future. She searched for jobs using the career center computers, but was encouraged by her case manager to consider a training program to learn medical billing and coding. Funding approval was received and Yvette was accepted into the program. Additionally, she received transportation vouchers to get to and from the classes. Yvette was also encouraged to prepare for the GED exams so that she would have advancement opportunities in her new field.

Outcomes & Benefits

Yvette completed her training and found employment as a medical biller. “I’m currently taking General Education courses and getting ready to test for my GED," said Yvette. "I have wonderful employment as a medical biller with ASSETMD Inc. I would not have been able to achieve all this on my own without the help from SELACO WIB. I would like to take this time to thank my case manager Sandra, and SELACO WIB for a new beginning in life.” Congratulations, Yvette!
